Illuminating Design for Council’s Her Way Initiative

Overview
The Her Way Initiative, led by Bayside Council, aimed to enhance decorative lighting in King St Mall and three other locations over a five-month period, with a focus on improving safety, visual amenity, and civic pride, particularly for women and girls navigating the area at night. The project was partially funded by Transport NSW to ensure the safety of public spaces near transport hubs, creating a welcoming environment for all members of the community.
Bayside Council, overseeing 29 suburbs in Sydney’s South East, serves a diverse population of approximately 182,000 residents. The Council were looking to implement lighting solutions that were not only visually appealing but also energy-efficient, robust, and compliant with Australian Standards (AS1158, AS4282).
The design had to be adaptable for different events, inclusive of all genders and ages, and capable of ensuring safe lighting conditions at all times. The lighting strategy featured a luminous veil to create a warm atmosphere, pole lighting to improve pedestrian safety, and RGBW LED lighting to enhance the plaza’s ambiance.
Bayside Council chose Elec Comm for our innovative design and proven ability to execute projects in live community environments. The project successfully addressed the Council’s original concerns, fostering a sense of civic pride and encouraging greater use of the area at night.

Cumberland City Council Her Way Lighting Installation

Overview
Elec Comm were engaged by Cumberland City Council to improve night-time safety and walkability in three key locations within Cumberland City Council, with a focus on enhancing the security of women and girls. To achieve this, we would design, install and maintain functional lighting that would eliminate dark spots and ensure well-lit pathways and public spaces, thereby reducing safety risks. In addition to improving safety, the project also aimed to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the areas, incorporating creative lighting solutions such as fairy lights on trees to make the streets more attractive and inviting. This was intended to encourage more people to use these public spaces after dark, creating a more pleasant and secure environment.
The successful implementation of the lighting design significantly improved both safety and visual appeal in the targeted areas, particularly benefiting women and girls. By addressing the community’s concerns, the project not only created a safer environment but also fostered a sense of civic pride. Our ability to deliver high-quality results without disrupting daily activities further demonstrated our expertise in managing projects in active public spaces.

Barometer Architectural Lighting Refurbishment

Overview
Elec Comm were commissioned to replace the outdated luminaires and control system of the rooftop barometer at Mirvac’s office building. The project involved integrating the new system with existing daylight and pressure sensors, as well as the building’s BMS. The old lantern, which had been decommissioned due to poor luminous intensity control, and the failed standalone luminaires, were fully replaced to meet Australian Standard AS4282 for obtrusive light.
The 25m high lantern, designed as part of the KENS Project by JPW Architecture, includes eight horizontal digital pressure indicators that display real-time atmospheric pressure. As the barometric pressure changes, a series of lights are activated to show pressure levels, with a rippling effect created when the pressure changes. This visual display was previously unreliable due to early LED technology but was revitalised with modern, energy-efficient LEDs that offer longer lifespan and easy maintenance.
The upgraded system enhanced both the functionality and aesthetics of the rooftop barometer, improving reliability and compliance with lighting standards. Additionally, the new system’s smart controls enable easy repurposing of the lantern for special events, ensuring long-term flexibility and energy efficiency.
